1. Where did the narrator live with his family?
Ans: The narrator, Philippa, lived at Big Half Moon Lighthouse with her father and brother Claude.
2. What does the story teach?
Ans: In the story, the poet teaches about the values of family and relationships that bring happiness to the child’s heart and how the child brings a good friend into the family.
3. Who was Aunt Esther?
Ans: Aunt Esther was the mother of Dick and Mimi. She was a widow who lived hundreds of miles away in the country.
4. What was hard to do with only two children?
Ans: Playing the game and running into the pirate caves at the lighthouse was hard for only two.
5. Did the narrator’s father have any relatives?
Ans: Yes. Father told the narrator that he had a brother and sister a long time ago but now he never knew anything about them of his own fault. One day he quarreled with his brother and left home. After some years, he felt guilty and came back but he learned his brother was dead and no one knew about his sister.
6. What did the author do after coming back to the island?
Ans: The author made a lot of kites with his brother Claude after coming back to the island in summer because in winter when they went to the mainland, Claude had learned to make a kite from one boy. So in summer they made a more beautiful and colorful kite as a hobby.
7. How did they repair the kite?
Ans: At first, they rushed into the lighthouse to find some red paper but they did not find any colorful paper so they took the thing that was seen first, an old letter lying in the book in the lighthouse. They patched the kite with the letter on both sides and dried it by the fire. Finally, they went outside and the kite flew like a bird.
8. What would be so jolly according to the author?
Ans: According to the author having an uncle, aunt, and some cousins would bring a lot of joy. He observed during his winter trip to the mainland that everyone seemed to have the happiest and most joyful relationships.
9. When did Father look sorrowful?
Ans: Father looked sorrowful after reading the letter from Aunt Esther because a long time ago he lost his family through his own fault and did not know anything about them. So he always felt guilty about his past. After many years, when he received a letter from Aunt Esther he looked sorrowful and emotional.
10. How did the kite get a hole?
Ans: One day, Philippa noticed a strong wind which had been perfect for flying kites so she quickly ran to get the beautiful red kite. However, as she was returning she tripped and fell over the rocks and her elbow went right through the kite making a big hole in it.
11. How did they decorate the kite?
Ans: The author made a big kite with his brother Claude and covered it with red paper that looked beautiful and shiny. They loved the kite so much that they decorated it with gold tinsel stars to make it shinier and lastly, they wrote their full names on it: Claude Leete, Philippa Leete, Big Half Moon Lighthouse.
12. Describe the summer beauty of the lighthouse.
Ans: In the summer, the lighthouse looked more beautiful. At that time, the sea looked blue and calm, and a gentle wind always blew. It was the most peaceful and quiet time in the lighthouse.
13. Why did mainland people feel sorry for the narrator?
Ans: Every winter, Philippa, Claude, and their father went to the mainland because in winter the harbor froze and when spring came back, they again returned to the lighthouse. At that moment, mainland people felt sorry for the children because they thought there was no one to play with them.
14. What story did father tell the narrator?
Ans: The father shared with Philippa a story from his past that always filled him with guilt. He told Philippa about his own beautiful family that he had long ago but one day he had a quarrel with his brother and left home angrily. After many years, he returned home feeling guilty but found out his brother was dead and no one knew anything about his sister.
15. What made the narrator feel happiest at the end of the story?
Ans: At the end of the story Philippa found a family like those of the mainland people that was the best thing for the narrator. They lived with Aunt Esther, who was kind, and some cousins, Dick and Mimi, who were joyful and full of energy.
