2. Summary
The story “The Model Millionaire” is about a kind and gentle young man named Hughie Erskine. He is handsome and friendly, but he cannot keep a job and does not earn enough money. Because of this, he lives on a small allowance from his aunt. Hughie is in love with a girl named Laura Merton, and the two of them are liked by everyone. However, Laura’s father wants Hughie to have ten thousand pounds of his own before they can get married. Hughie has a friend named Alan Trevor who is a well-known painter. One day, Hughie visits Alan’s studio and sees him painting an old beggar dressed in torn clothes. The beggar is posing as the model for the painting. Hughie feels very sorry for the poor man and thinks the model should get more money for his hard work. When Alan steps out for a while, Hughie talks kindly to the beggar. He feels so sad for him that he gives the old man his last gold coin, even though Hughie knows he will have to walk everywhere for many days because now he has no money left. That evening, Hughie meets Alan again and learns a shocking truth. The old beggar is not poor at all. He is actually Baron Hausberg, one of the richest men in Europe. Hughie feels embarrassed that he gave money to such a rich man, and Alan laughs at the situation. The next morning, a messenger from the Baron visits Hughie and hands him a cheque for ten thousand pounds as a wedding gift. The Baron wants to reward Hughie for having such a good heart. Now Hughie can finally marry Laura. Alan becomes the best man at the wedding, and Baron Hausberg gives a speech, calling Hughie “the model millionaire” not for his wealth, but for his kindness and generosity.
