Mild the mist upon the hill,
Telling not of storms to-morrow;
No; the day has wept its fill,
Spent its store of silent sorrow.

Explanation: The poet sees the light mist gently covering the hills, and it gives no sign of any storm coming the next day. It feels as if the day has already cried too much through the rain. The rain is shown as “silent sorrow,” meaning nature has quietly poured out its sadness.

Oh, I’m gone back to the days of youth,
I am a child once more;
And ‘neath my father’s sheltering roof,
And near the old hall door.
